Type Chronology Booklet

TASK: The objective of this project was to design a 16-page booklet, which would showcase the six styles of type in chronological order. A parent typeface must be selected that will be used throughout the whole book. The interior pages will include a title page, introduction page, and followed by a two-page spread for each typographic era. After the interior of the booklet was complete, I was to design a cover that matches the style of the poster within.

My process began with determining the proportions for my booklet from the Bringhurst proportion list. The next step was selecting the parent typeface that would be used throughout the whole document. I wanted to use a sans serif typeface while still representing the transitional typographic era, so I decided to use Mr. Eaves XL Mod Nar OT. This typeface is a sans serif version of the transitional font Mrs. Eaves. Once I established a sophisticated layout for the information pages, then I moved on to the poster designs. My approach to the poster designs was to showcase key features of the selected typeface using figure-ground and a similar relationship between letterforms. Lastly, while designing this booklet, I paid close to alignments, hierarchy, white space, and gestalt principles.
